For a word that is so tricky to spell, we feel that 'Entrepreneur' is used far too often these days.
Anyone starting a business, or even running one that their forefathers started many years ago is commonly described as being an Entrepreneur!
OK, so the dictionary definition of the meaning may be rather vague and is used to refer to anyone setting up a business.
Our view of the true meaning of an Entrepreneur is anyone who:
Is a self-made person who starts/sells and starts MULTIPLE businesses, or takes an existing business and does something special with it.
The true entrepreneur will also have one or more of the following qualities:
- Sees opportunities that others miss
- Isn't afraid of making mistakes (little and often and sometimes big!)
- Takes calculated risks
There are successful (or otherwise) business people, but they are necessarily entrepreneurs.
So come on everyone let's keep the word reserved for those who really deserve the title!
There is also the SMEM (Self-Made Entrepreneur Millionaire), a phrase coined by Duncan Bannatyne, I believe, but that should obviously be reserved for even fewer individuals!

I like the sound of SMEMM and dislike the E word .
Went to - Born Entrepreneurs, Born Leaders: How your genes affect your work life seminar by Visiting Distinguished International Scholar, Professor Scott Shane at Newcastle University Business School last night . It seems that whilst you might have the necessary Genes , it still comes down to your upbringing and your inner desire for success and luck . You have to be in the right place at the right time .
