Did they ‘Beat The Boss’ ?

Claire Glynn, Creative Director of Atomic Web Solutions is featuring on BBC programme Beat The Boss this Thursday afternoon.  The programme starts at 17:15 on the CBBC (Children’s BBC) channel and the programme runs for 30 minutes.

 

Beat The Boss pitches three budding entrepreneurs against three business people.  Both teams have to design a product for the children’s market, the prototypes are then created by a manufacturing company and judged by 20 children.

 

The winning team leave the BBC London Studio in a Limousine, the losing team go to the bus stop.

 

The BBC researchers found Claire by doing a Google search for ‘award-winning north east business women’ – so featuring highly in the search engines not only brings business, but can also land a TV appearance too.

 

Will Claire be travelling in style or taking the bus?  Leave your predication below.

Facebook Linking

I recently noticed that the new facebook layout allows you to link back to you web site/s twice.

As well as adding them into your information area you can also click on the basic information underneath your profile photo and add them there too.

Remember the more incoming links you have to your web site the more highly ranked it becomes.

Diet Coke and Mentos

A great example of web marketing, have you seen Diet Coke and Mentos Mints on You Tube.

Of course this didn’t come from either company, I highly doubt that health and safety would allow such a thing.  But can you imagine if you could come up with an idea like that to really get your customers so excited about promoting your products or services?

Think I’ll go out and buy a bottle of Diet Coke and some Mentos Mints and try it myself.

When the economy is down - up your marketing!

Unless you've been under a rock for the past 6 months, you'll be well aware of all the media coverage informing us that we are in a recession - because of the 'Credit Crunch' and escalating fuel costs etc.

My view is that a lot of this is pure scaremongering.  OK so the banks have tightened up a bit and are not giving out as many mortgages, loans etc.  Many would say that they shouldn't have been so easy with the money in the first place.  Fuel is far too expensive, but not a great deal we can do about it, business has to go on.

What many organisations are doing is cutting back on their advertising and marketing, but the wise ones are doing the opposite.  Whilst everyone else is cutting back, they are pushing ahead with more Adwords, more SEO, more e-mail marketing and more networking.

What they will achieve of course (if they do things properly) is a greater share of the market and when people realise that the recession is not having that much impact on them and begin to buy again, well surprise, surprise, the compaines that kept up their visibility by marketing well will get the business.

Snake Oil Salesmen! in SEO

I had a call form a client of ours today.  We built a web site for them, did the SEO and are now doing some search engine marketing and Adwords management.

Sales are increasing month on month and the client is VERY happy.  The client had kindly called to thank us for the work and ongoing results, but also to give us the heads-up that they'd been approached by a company claiming to be Adwords and SEO experts and that they would do a great job with guaranteed page 1 Google listings etc.

Now we weren't worried about this - after all, business is business, but words like 'guaranteed page 1 listings' should always start alarm bells.  In the search engine game, there are no guarantees!

I did a quick search on the company name that my client gave us and lo and behold I came up with dozens of forum articles about this company taking money, getting no results, not returning calls etc.  I wish I had a pound for every time I hear this, but the damaging thing here is that this sort of thing helps nobody.

It doesn't help the rest of us, doing good honest work for our clients and it certainly doesn't help the client.  No matter how good a job we are doing, if someone offers miracle results, there are always going to be many who are tempted.

In conclusion, there are no easy wins in SEO and web marketing, it takes knowledge, skill and more importantly time, work and patience to get results.  Don;t be fooled by the Snake Oil Salesmen.

SEO Month By Month - Part 3 (Months 13 to 18)

Your web site should now be getting more deeply indexed by the search engines (deep indexing means indexing of individual pages widely across the web site) if you have optimised the individual page content and meta tags to reflect the keywords of that page, then your site pages should be startin to get found on these.

From the time since your web site went live, if you have engaged a professional to obtain good one-way incoming links for you, these should be helping to increase your ranking as the sites containing your links get indexed.  Notice that I write 'engaged a professional' - you can of course try to obtain links yourself, but it's hard and ongoing work - your time is far better spend doing what you do best.

Any good web marketing company will have good databases of sites that are likely to accept a link back to your site.  We do link building for clients and are achieving great results - it really does work!

SEO Month By Month - Part 2 (Months 5 to 12)

Months 5 to 12 - Orders trickle in. Google and other Search engines may not yet have featured your site, here's what you should be doing now:

• Keep up to date with developments in your keyword sector. Find out what the big sites are doing and get ahead of the game. Prepare pages in anticipation of a big site coming out with a new product. Networking is important for the ongoing success of your website. Interact with colleagues in the forums. Your learning accelerates by networking not just reading or lurking around. It can bring you tips, links and will keep you aware of what is new in the internet world
• Be prepared to make notes. If you are aiming to build a page a day, you will need to be inspired and have a way to record that inspiration. Keep a note book of your ideas as they come so that you do not forget them
• You should know what comes next... Google loves content - quality content. After a year you should try to ensure that your site, blog etc has a lot of pages of good broad based content with a wide range of keywords. You will be placed well under a good range of keywords, receive more reciprocal links and put your in a good position to start making your site create money for you. You should be seeing around 500 to 2000 referrals per day from search engines. More pages will increase the possibility of more referrals.

Search Engine Optimisation Month By Month

So you have created your website and taken time to use key Search Engine Optimisation techniques. The next phases in this life cycle are concerned with the processes you use off-line to maximize the performance of your website. Below is an overview of what you can expect - this post shows month 4.

Month 4 - Google acknowledged your site. Some traffic and orders come to your site.

In the meantime continue to do the following:

• To run a modern site you need to have referrals available Anytime. To keep an eye on this get a quality logger/tracker. Change host if your current one does not allow referrers
• Regularly check your linking system to ensure search engine spiders can crawl effectively over your site
• Submit your website details to niche directories for your keywords
• Find sites that have links pages or who exchange links Freely. Try to swap links with one fresh site per day. Just send them an e-mail and request a swap. If they refuse don’t worry and don’t give up
• Keep up with writing the content each day. Write topical articles and minimize ‘blog’ type personal stuff. Study the ‘webspeak’ that works with the visitors and develop your writing skills. Write for speed of reading; use text breaks, short sentences, bullet points etc. Remember surfers scan not read
• Avoid gimmicks on your site or anything that appears to be spam or unethical
• When you receive a request for a link, make sure you check out the site.
• Do not link with a site just for the sake of it Check them in Google and get their pr (pagernk) value, look for listings in directories, check the topic and site is similar to yours
• Use other ways to advertise your website. Tap into social bookmarking sites, forums and mailing lists. Read as much as you can from the top forums for internet marketing
• Check out keyword suggestion tools for new ideas for fresh content pages
• Do regular web traffic analysis and study your logs. Give search engines what they need to get to your site. In your logs look for the keywords people are using. Found a new word? Build a fresh page around it. Study these logs carefully. Keyword optimization will ensure better conversion rates of visitors to customers

What is Google up to?

I'm just wondering what Google have been doing with their search algorithms recently.  I did a search on 'search engine marketing north east' today and in number 3 position was an article by a local newspaper that was from 2005!

They tell us that 'content is king' but three year old content that is totally outdated is not what I'd call good content return!  maybe others of you have noticed similar results?

Maybe it's just a blip - I sincerely hope so..
